DIY: Safari inspired necklace

DIY leather necklace

Donna Karan leather and wood necklace

This year Donna Karan created a beautiful collection of accessories made from wood and leather. It is very extravagant, it screams the words "nature","wilderness", "safari", and I love safari inspired style in clothes and accessories. I fell in love with one of the pieces in her collection, but the only problem (for me) was the price - $655. I couldn't come up with any ideas of how to make my own DK statement pendant, until one day when I accidentally (browsing for something else) visited this web site http://www.abeautifulmess.com/, and found a post about transferring pictures or photos to fabric...so  that was a key to my question "How to?". I was wondering if I can try to transfer the photo to the leather, and it worked. Here is what I did:
When a laser printed image of my pendant was covered with gel medium ( I used Liquidex), I pressed it onto a piece of a light colored leather and let it dry overnight. After it was completely dry I sprayed the top of the paper with water, and rubbed the surface with fingers until pieces of the paper started coming off, so the transferred image was revealed. Then I cut 2 pieces in the shape of DK necklace out of a thick carton, and glued brown leather on a bigger piece of carton and "transferred image" leather on a smaller one. After that I glued a golden cord around the edge of a smaller piece and a suede cord around the big one. I bought a chain in arts and crafts store and braided it with a brown leather cord. The last and easiest step was to attach chain to the pendant. "A beautiful mess" helped me creating my statement necklace.

  3. Aviator sunglasses, or "pilot's glasses", were originally developed in 1936 by Ray-Ban for pilots to protect their eyes while flying. Aviators were given their name due to their original intention of protecting aviator's eyes. Ray-Ban began selling the glasses to the public a year after they were developed.
